Our 7th graders recently participated in a hands-on DNA extraction lab using materials and equipment generously provided by Jackson Laboratories. In this activity, students explored the structure and purpose of DNA and learned how scientists isolate genetic material from living cells. Using their own saliva samples, students followed a step-by-step protocol to break open cells and separate cellular components in preparation for further genetic analysis.
With the support of the Jackson Labs kits—including collection tubes, extraction buffer, pipettes, filters, and other processing materials—students practiced authentic laboratory techniques such as measuring, observing chemical changes, and documenting their procedures. The extracted DNA will be used in a PCR (polymerase chain reaction) demonstration, allowing students to see how genetic material can be amplified and studied in real-world biotechnology settings.

The girls' basketball teams traveled to Bucksport last night. The girls’ A team faced early offensive challenges, and difficulty finding their rhythm on defense made it hard to stay competitive throughout the game. Their usual determination wasn’t fully evident during last night’s performance, like it was in their previous game. However, the team did find a bit of momentum towards the end. Karlee, Paisley, Kylie, and Ava made baskets.
The B team put up an impressive fight last night, staying neck-and-neck through the first three quarters. It was clear they were integrating what they’ve been learning into their gameplay. Even when the other team pulled ahead in the final quarter, they played with heart and refused to give up. Points were put up by Paige, Kaelyn, Abby, and Maggie.
