Mission Statement

The mission of the Dr. Lewis S. Libby School Gifted and Talented Program is to motivate gifted learners to strive toward their potential with challenging academic opportunities while encouraging social/emotional growth.

Philosophy

Based upon State guidelines, the Dr. Lewis Libby School will identify 5% of our school population who possess aptitudes and/or abilities that require services beyond the scope of the classroom curricula in order for those students to pursue their potential. An equitable and fair identification process that includes both objective and subjective measurements is paramount in identifying students with needs in the areas of Math, Reading, Science, Social Studies, Art, and Music. To maintain the integrity of the Gifted and Talented Program, ongoing assesment of the identification process and student services is neccesary

Program Goals

  1. To ensure a fair and equitible identification process through use of both objective and subjective assessments.
  2. To provide "specialized instruction beyond that available within the regular school program" to identied GT students grades 3-8.
  3. To educate teachers, parents and students about the academic and social/emotional needs of gifted learners and effective strategies to meet their needs.

Identification Process

  1. GT Committee collects student data Grades 3-8 (at least 3 measures including both Objective and Subjective types)
    • Objective (NWEA, NECAP, MEA test scores)
    • Subjective (Teacher referrals, parent nominations, interset surveys, interviews, performance and portfolio)
  2. GT Committee reviews data
  3. Student Talent Pool of Top 10-12% created
  4. CogAT abitility test administered to Student Talent Pool upon receipt of Consent Letter to parent/gaurdian
  5. GT Committee reviews new data
  6. Top 5% of Talent Pool identified for Gifted Services
    • Non-identification can be appealed through Superintendent (furter data will be collected and reviewed by GT Committee).
  7. Program decisions made per identified student's educational needs upon receipt of Consent Letter to parent/gaurdian
