4/12/2010:
On Saturday April 10th, two Destination Imagination teams from Dr. Lewis S. Libby School competed in the State Tournament at the University of Maine in Orono. Team "Saya Bica" (Maddie Mahan, Libby Spencer, Brittany Cousins, Cam DePaolo and Tyler Gifford) met the challenge of Breaking D.I. News, telling the story of the 2004 earthquake in Sumatra using only newspapers for props and costumes and creating a weight bearing structure of only newspaper and glue.
Team Wildcats (Emily LeClair, Kassidy Dill, Ashley Smith, Jessica Hayden and Emily Patrock) met the Do or D.I. challenge of performing an improvisational skit involving one out of ten possible stock characters and endangered species or objects, with the intention of deciding if and why this endangered thing should be saved. Both teams also faced an instant challenge which involves quick, on-your-feet problem solving, creative thinking and teamwork to create, within four minutes, a solution then presenting it to a panel of appraisers within two minutes! Both teams received praise from their judges for their creative ideas and excellent teamwork. Team Wildcats even earned the first place trophy for their challenge, and have been invited to represent the State of Maine at the Global Tournament in Knoxville, Tennessee, May 26-29, 2010.
All the DI teams would like to say, "Thank you!" to the volunteers who donated their time working at the D.I. Tournaments so that we could compete: Mrs. Michaud, for working at both the Regional and State tournament, and Mrs. Clark, Mrs. James, and Mr. Hathaway, for donating their time working at the Regional Tournament. Thank you also to parents and teachers who supported us behind the scenes and in the audience!

Congratulations to the Dr. Lewis S. Libby Destination Imagination Teams. On Saturday March 20, three teams from Dr. Lewis S. Libby School competed in a Regional Destination Imagination Challenge at the Eastern Maine Community College. Each team had to solve a mind-bending Team Challenge and Instant Challenge in a timed / judged contest. Destination ImagiNation is a world-wide Creative Problem-Solving (CPS) program for students to learn and experience creativity, teamwork, and problem solving. Several months ago each of our teams selected one mind-bending Team Challenge to work on with their DI Team Leader, Mrs. Corkum. In addition, our teams practiced Instant Challenges where they were giving an intriguing instant challenge to solve immediately using their truly "on-the-spot" thinking. Throughout the months our students developed and practiced their creative problem solving skills. On Saturday our students showcased these skills during a Regional Challenge or Tournament where our teams competed against schools extending from the greater Bangor Area to Presque Isle. Each of the Dr. Lewis S. Libby teams did an outstanding job solving their Destination ImagiNation challenges! Two of our three teams have qualified to advance to the State Tournament to be held on April 10, 2010 at University of Maine. Way to go Wildcats!!!!

Students have been working to create solutions to a variety of challenges posed in the Destination Imagination Challenge. Milford students, Emily Patrock, Jessica Hayden, Emily LeClair, Kassidy Dill and Ashley Smith have researched ten different stock character and ten different endangered species or objects in preparation for an improvisational act they will perform. This improv act will provide one stock character and one endangered object (unknown until moments before competition). These students will then have to ad lib an act in which they show the decision making process of rescuing the endangered object or allowing it to become extinct. Another team of students, Rachel Libby, John Parrick, Ricky Doane and Zac Libby have taken on a technical challenge. They have built a delivery system (catapult), targets to shoot at, and objects to project in order to meet the challenge of delivering objects over a six foot wall aimed at a given target on the other side. Oh, and they have no line of vision to those targets they're aiming at! The third team of students, Tyler Gifford, Maddie Mahan, Libby Spencer, Brittany Cousins and Cam DePaolo, have focused on the ability to recycle. These students have built a structure out of nothing but newspaper and glue that must weigh less than 76 grams and be able to hold weight. They have also researched a news article about an earthquake that hit Sumatra, then recycled this story into their own storyline to be acted out using props and costumes made out of newspapers! All students have worked diligently to create exciting solutions! All teams will be competing in the Destination Imagination Regional Tournament Saturday March 20th at Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor.
