Volunteer Programs
To provide greater parental/community flexibility and choice, the volunteer programs are divided into two categories: Classroom programs, Non-Classroom programs. These opportunities are designed to foster parent/teacher and community/school relationships. Together we can reinforce the importance of community service to the students. We encourage each parent to participate in one or more of the following activities at least twice a year. In - Classroom Volunteer Opportunities
Storyteller - If your life’s experiences were a book you would have volumes of stories to share. Maybe you are a veteran. Maybe you grew up in the Depression. Being a storyteller at the Dr. Lewis S. Libby School provides a unique opportunity for parents and community members to increase their school involvement in a fun and natural way by telling a personal story. Students learn of regional history, heritage, and the experiences of others. We all have a story that is worth sharing. Why not come and share your story today. Guest Speaker - From time to time our school is in need of a quest speaker for a particular topic or theme. This is an exciting way parents and community members can share their specialized knowledge and skills with students through topic-relevant discussions. Presentations can be made to a specific class or to the entire student body. Topics for the speaker series could include but are not limited to: current events, politics, science, community, law, and our environment. If you are interested in being a guest speaker, please contact your child’s teacher or the principal. Non-Classroom Volunteer Opportunities For parents who prefer involvement outside of the classroom, Dr. Lewis S. Libby offers many opportunities. Many parents enjoy working with the Parent-Teacher-Community organization. Others may prefer accompany school trips, working on set designs, “fun afternoons”, field day, or the winter Olympics.
Volunteer Chaperone - Volunteering, as a chaperone, is one of the most important and rewarding school activities a parent can become involved with. As a chaperone, you become a positive role model for the students, representing and fostering the many qualities supportive by Dr. Lewis S. Libby education principles.
Parent/Child Lunch Date –We encourage parents visiting the school to have a special “lunch date” with their child in the cafeteria during the child’s regular lunch schedule. It is a wonderful opportunity for a little quality time and for parents to participate in their child’s school day. Please contact the office during the morning of the day you planto visit so the kitchen staff can plan accordingly. Parents may pay for their meal at the office or in the serving line.
Service Learning - At our school this year each homeroom and homeroom teacher will be asked to partner up with another staff member, and at least one person from the community, to work on a service learning project that will benefit the school, the town of Milford, the State of Maine, or our country. Together these service-learning teams will plan, implement, evaluate, and present a service-learning project. If you have any ideas regarding possible projects that could be completed or you are personally interested in partnering with a homeroom teacher please let us know! Miscellaneous-There may be some type of involvement that you personally feel could benefit our school in a manner that we have yet to use. We would appreciate a call, so we could get together and talk to you regarding how this opportunity might benefit both you and our school!
