Saturday, April 18 2010 - Chaisson Field Community Clean Up Day

Spring  Returns  to  Chaisson  Memorial  Field

These first days of spring in Milford seem to vibrate with rebirth; the cacophony of happy little songbirds, the nightly chorus of peepers, the greening fields of new grass and the latest transformation of Chaisson Memorial Field. If you have not recently visited Chaisson Memorial Field, the Town’s recreational fields located behind the Dr. Lewis S. Libby School, you should.

In 2006, the Chaisson Field Committee presented a three phase restoration plan to Town officials to revitalize the dilapidated Chaisson Memorial Field complex.  The Committee obtained the necessary funding via the solicitation of grants, donations and existing funds.  In just a few short years, the decaying Chaisson Memorial Field has been transformed into a shining new recreational complex for all Milford citizens to enjoy.

Phase I of the restoration project, which included the reconstruction of the entire field complex and the addition of a new paved exercise track, was completed in 2007-2008.  Thanks to the committed efforts of parents, friends, students and town officials, the momentum has continued.

With the return of spring, Phase II is well underway with the addition of four new professionally constructed dugouts by local Milford businesses/citizens. Mike Thornton of Thornton Construction donated the gravel and crushed stone. RL Sales & Service, owned by Robert & Colleen Leighton, conducted the site prep work, poured the concrete slabs, constructed the dugouts at no cost, including some finishing touches. Ricky King of Rick King Carpentry donated his time and expertise to construct the benches and the helmet rack inside the dugouts along with the help from other parents. The results are outstanding!

The final realization that spring has arrived came this past weekend as the Chaisson Field Committee held a field cleanup day at the town’s recreational complex. Over 50 students, parents, and citizens gathered to wake the sleeping fields from their somber winters rest.  Volunteers worked diligently throughout the entire day raking leaves, weeding infields, rotor tilling, spreading infield mix and placing the final touches to the interior of the dugouts in preparation for a joyful season of community enjoyment.

Our deepest gratitude and thanks to all involved in making this community revitalization effort possible.

Wednesday, Feb. 25 - 2nd Student / Faculty Basketball Game

On Wednesday evening the Chaisson Field Committee held a student vs. faculty basketball game. The boys/girls A and B teams and the Pee Wee league each played against the the faculty team. The faculty team put up a good fight but in the end the students were victorious. The faculty team almost beat the Pee Wee team but the youg guns were just too fast and agile for the veteran team.

In between games (while the faculty team rested) kids of all ages participated in lots of fun events including musical hula hoops, free throws, and four corners. The Champion Girls Team shaved Coach Williams head and the Champion Cheerleader squad cheered all night long. A great time was had by all.

A great thanks to the wonderful Dr. Lewis S. Libby faculty for making this event such a success each year. And many thanks to all of the parents and citizens for supporting your school and the ongoing Chaisson Field restoration efforts.
